It’s not too late for integrated marketers who’ve been slow to adopt social media marketing and outreach. Once they get past common myths, such as “it’s just for kids” or “it will just open us up for complaints,” professionals realize how much value social can bring to their marketing.
Have you ever been immune to the charms of something wildly popular – say, a TV show like Mad Men or Game of Thrones —and you finally give in and realize, “WOW, this is amazing!” but now everyone is on Season 46 while you’re still on Episode 4? And then you think, “I’m so far behind I’ll never catch up!”
If that’s you, you’re not alone: as of 2017, 24% of small businesses weren’t using social.
Whatever your reasons, it’s time to take the plunge! We’ll bust 5 common myths to convince you it’s where you need to be.
Myth #1: My customers aren’t on there.
Sorry to harsh on your excuse, but almost everyone uses one or more channels. As of Q4 2017, Facebook had more than 2 billion users, Instagram boasted over 800 million users, and LinkedIn had more than 500 million users. There’s an excellent statistical chance that your customers are there, waiting for you.
Myth #2: Social media is just for kids.
You’ll find unique opportunities to market to different age segments: for example, those flush-with-cash Baby Boomers engage with brands through their social media platforms and then visit the website, while Millennials place a lot of trust in influencers and user-generated content.
Myth #3: Social media is just memes and cat videos.
Social media is a powerful branding tool, a cost-effective way to boost the performance of your email marketing, and a B2B prospecting tool for finding qualified leads. IKEA even found a way to use its Instagram feed as a catalog.
Myth #4: People are just going to come to my page and complain.
Yes, people may seize an opportunity to air their grievances…but they’re probably already doing it. At least now you have a chance to be part of the conversation and figure out how to use their feedback. Social media is a great customer service tool exactly for that reason. Be patient, resist the temptation to lash out, and you’ll be able to create stronger relations.
Myth 5: It’s so time-consuming
It does take some time, if you’re starting from scratch. But there are so many free, easy-to-use tools that can help integrated marketers automate content creation and crunch numbers.
If you still think it’s too time-consuming and complicated, there are no shortage of contractors and professionals to outsource to. It’s easier, and more rewarding, than you think!
